Internet Use Policy

Barrett Friendly Library provides access to the world of information available on the Internet through computer workstations in its library.  This service is intended to enhance the traditional print and audiovisual collections established to meet the needs of out community.  Library users are strongly cautioned, however, that Barrett Friendly Library does not control and cannot be held responsible for the accuracy or currency of information accessed through the Internet.  Some sited may contain material that is offensive or inappropriate for minors.  Parents or guardians are responsible for supervising their minor children. Educational materials are available in all our libraries to promote Internet safety.  All library users are encouraged to educate themselves as consumers of this new technology and to exercise a healthy skepticism when encountering unsubstantiated information.

While every effort has been made to insure uninterrupted access to the Internet, no warranty is provided and Barrett Friendly Library is not responsible for any loss, financial or otherwise, associated with the use of this service.

Internet access is a privilege.  Use of any library computer constitutes an agreement to abide by this policy.  Inappropriate use, as determined by the library staff, may result in the loss of all computer access and/or prosecution under applicable state and federal laws.  The following guidelines apply to all Internet users and may be revised at any time.

All users must sign in at the library desk and may be required to show identification.  In the event that others are waiting to use a terminal, time restrictions will be enforced.

Children under the age of seven must have an adult with them to supervise their use of the computer.  Parents and guardians are encouraged to participate in their children’s library activities regardless of age.

 The number of users at any one workstation may be limited at the discretion of the library staff.

Information may be saved by printing.  Do not save to the hard drive.

Users are not permitted to change the configurations of library hardware of software or to attempt to breach computer security systems.

Illegal activities are not permitted on library workstations.

Users are reminded that Internet access occurs in a public setting and are prohibited from the display and/or distribution of any material that is obscene, contains or makes reference to explicit sexual materials as defined in 18 Pa. C.S. 5903, contains child pornography or is harmful to minors.

Users are required to abide by copyright laws and licensing agreements. 

Users may not load their own software on library computers.

Users will be held responsible for willful damage to equipment.

Inappropriate use of e-mail, chat rooms or gaming sites, as defined within the context to this policy, is not permitted.

Harassing behavior of any kind is not permitted from library terminals.

Library staff may terminate any Internet session at any time.
